Carnival in Cadiz

As elsewhere in the Catholic world, carnival is celebrated before the 40 days of Lent. Most Andalucian towns stage some kind of parade, and there is usually a dance and a "Carnival Queen" contest. As one of Spain´s major ports during the 16th century, Cadiz copied the carnival of Venice, a city with which it had much trade, and since then it has become the liveliest and most dazzling carnival town in mainland Spain, famous for its amusing and creative figurines and satirical song groups.
The Carnival centres around Shrove Tuesday (February 28th 2006, February 20th 2007, February 5th 2008, February 24th 2009, February 16th 2010, March 8th 2011, February 21st 2012, February 12th 2013, March 4th 2014). Cádiz celebrates the carnival with processions from the weekend before, to the weekend after.
The carnival is the fiesta of the people. It is a reaction against the abstentions and prohibitions of all types. This fiesta attempts to break social order and liberalise instincts, helped by wearing masks and fancy dress.
During the Civil War, General Franco abolished the Carnival in rebel areas. After the war there was still much opposition to the Carnival by the rulers so Franco abolished the Carnival in 1937. It continued in Cadiz however.
Local groups of funny fellows make up satirical ditties lampooning celebrities and big shots, in a parade which sends the whole city into a state of frenzy. The official competition takes place in the Gran Teatro de la Falla.

The new Cadiz Card

A pleasant evening in the “Patio de Levante” by the Cadiz Cathedral has been the scenario where the Town Council of Cadiz presented the new card Cadizcard.

The card is a tourist bonus which allows the tourist to travel the main monuments of the city at once having a direct access and without passing through the ticket office or waiting any queue. There is a total of eight tourist points or monuments to acknowledge more about the history of Cadiz. Furthermore, the card includes a ticket to take the tourist bus of Cadiz during 24 hours.
The tourist who acquires the card has a discount of 25% on the normal price of the visits, a total amount of 44 €, which, paying with the Cadizcard, decreases to 26€. The card lasts seven days long and can be used at any time whenever the monuments are open.

The association for tourism, trade and sport will give a total amount of 600.000 euros to build the Touristy Innovation Centre of Andalusia. This initial investment, to cover the period from 2006 to 2007, will be increased the following years, by at least 400.000 euros per year. 75% will be contributed by the Andalusian government, although its objective is self financing by participating in national and international projects.
That’s what Paulino Plata said during the sign of the statutes of the project. The project was constituted as foundation with the participation of 27 organizations of the tourism sector, universities, economical and social agents and technological centres.
This centre will have its headquarter in Marbella and it is the second one created in Spain which is going to be specialized in investigation and innovation of the sector. Its opening is planned for September.

How does a teacher live his holidays?

To tell you the truth, I was resting because of all the work which we had during the end of the course. Although I have not recovered totally yet, I will go to a musician camp as a trainer.

Of what does a musician camp consist?
It is a camp with a lot of musical activities, for example we show children to play different instruments by teaching them songs and plays.

People think that living Carnival during the summer is foolish.
We do not live carnival during the year, but all year long. To be in time for the Carnival of Cadiz we have to live it even more. Each hour of leisure is dedicated to composing and practising.

Catamanares in Cadiz

A total of 30.492 travellers have used the “catamaranes” service. It was initiated on the 6th of June and it connects Cádiz with two towns: El Puerto Santa María and Rota.

According to the Consortium, the line that covers Cadiz and El Puerto de Santa María, transported 24.831 passengers in 644 trips during the first month, meanwhile the line Cadiz-Rota was used by 5.661 passengers in 216 trips.

All the 560 trips were proceeded without incidences and the timetable was adhered to satisfactory.

The managers of the “City of Cadiz” organisation presented in the town council the folklore groups which will dance for the public in the Pemán.

The idea is that the dance and rhythms existing in and outside of our country will be shown and enjoyed by the Cadiz citizens. The 24th International Folklore Festival has started and will be in the Cadiz streets for some days.
Managers of the groups held speeches in the opening act, where they talked about the details of the performances. They highlighted the cultural richness of their countries and affirmed that they show these dances as political claims of each region.

The town council will try again to reach this title based on the Constitution of the second century and because Cadiz was the City where this text originated.

The Town Council of Cadiz is going to carry out a new attempt to get the “World Heritage City” title. After the last petition was refused, this time it is going to include a detail which will change the process: Cadiz being a Constitutional City and the seat of the Third Magna Letter, which was written after the American and the French ones.

The main pitfall was that there were a lot of historic towns which wanted the title, so the Unesco decided to limit the number of candidates. The town council of Cadiz will try again to obtain the title because of the constitutional character of the city.

The Mayor of Cádiz, Teófila Martínez, stated that she is going to take a resolution to the next session in August to obtain the approval of the Corporation. And after that, she will stand for the candidature again based on this topic “we want to sort problems out once and for all”.

The major Finnish tour-operator, Aurinkomatkat, will work on the airport of La Parra from 2007 on through the “good reception” of the province for the clients of the TUI Nordic wholesaler, with activity in Norway, Sweden, Finnland and Denmark, is in contact with the regional authorities in order to establish activities in Cádiz.

Within the next year the Costa de la Luz will approach the Nordic tourism market with the incentive of the first Finnish tour-operator, Aurinkomatkat. The company, dedicated to the organization and selling of vacations, confirmed yesterday that they will connect the airports Helsinki and Jerez with direct flights from 2007 on. There will be established a weekly connection with 144 seats between the airports Helsinki and La Parra in the months from May to October. The manoeuvre is prepared to transport up to 3.500 travellors to the province, more than 100% of the Finnish people who come to the province every year.

Aurinkomatkat decided to disembark in the terminal Jerez because of the good results that have been registered on the Costa de la Luz from the clients this year. The wholesaler will bring for the first time travellors to Cadiz, although via the airport of Málaga, with long trips and therefore annoying for the tourists. The inconveniences however didn´t prevent that the sales go in good rhythm and, only in hotels of Rota there are more than 600 of 1000 Finnish people expected. “With the flights to Malaga you cannot estimate the real potential of the Costa de la Luz in Finnland; but this year we have seen that it can work and therefore the bet of Aurinkomatmat is to fly to Jerez the next year”, pointed out representatives from TUI Spain, who will receive the Finnish people in the province.

Cádiz promotes itself as equestrian destination for the British travel agents

Travel agents and British journalists specializing in equestrian tourism will travel to Cádiz from today until next Monday for a trip organized by the Tourism Patronage, who wants to promote the province as a destination for this sector.

As sources of the Patronage indicated, the British professionals will visit the “Yeguada del Hierro del Bocado”, the estate Los Alburejos, the Horse Centre “Novo Sancti Petri” and the “Dehesa de Montenmedio”, while also attending the show of “Sanlúcar de Barrameda” on the weekend.

Additionally to the equine sites of the province, the group will also visit hotels of Jerez de la Frontera, the port of Santa María and Rota, conveying that “the variety and singularity of the province makes it in itself a magnificent destination for equine tourism”, comment the sources.

With this initiative the Provincial Tourism Patronage tries that the British equine tourist market gets to know and value the offer of destinations in this specific sector.

Between the 22 and the 25 of June the arrival of another group of travel agents specializing in equine tourism is expected, this time coming from Belgium.

Cádiz welcomes the biggest cruise ship in its history

The Cadiz harbour welcomes for the first time in its history a cruise ship, named “Voyager of the Seas”, property of the navy company Royal Caribbean. It is the biggest cruise ship that ever has entered the harbour of Cadiz. Just arriving from Lissabon, the ship has a stop in Cadiz for the whole day, before it enters the mediterranean region. More than 3.300 tourists and 1.200 staff members disembark from the ship in order to visit the city. According to the harbour authorities, there has only been one cruise ship of this dimension before which has entered the bay: the Norway, property of the Norwegian Cruise Line. This ship, with a length of 313 metres, had to board in La Cabezuela (Puerto Real), as there was the risk it would dock on the ground or the darsene of Cádiz, informed La Voz of cádiz. According to the Royal Carribea, the Voyager has 14 decks with 1.550 berths, an ice-skating-court, a climbing wall, 3 swimming pools, a theatre and an avenue with shops and bars, in order to offer the best possible quantity of service to the clients.

"I've progressed physically as well, I felt much better at the end of the preseason tests compared to the first time I got on the bike. Technical experts of the environment council liberated in La Janda (Cádiz) an Iberian golden eagle specimen (Aquila adalberti) which was shot the last 11th of December in the municipality of Castilblanco de los Arroyos (Sevilla). The eagle, a three years old male, forms a part of the specimens group which has been released in La Janda, being a part of the specie Reintroduction project that the environment council carried out since 2002 with the collaboration of the Doñana Biological Station.
The wounded eagle was taken in by the Seprona until its admission in the Sevilla Threatened Species Recovery Centre, where the staff identified it as one of the birds of prey which were reintroduced by means of controlled breeding captivity techniques in the province of Cádiz in 2003. Although all of those eagles are equipped with two rings and with their radio-emitter which allows their monitoring, this specimen was devoid of its radio-emitter and one of its two rings; thanks to the one remaining technical experts could recognize it.

For the release, attended by the Cádiz Environment representative –Isabel Gómez-the eagle has been equipped with a new radio-monitoring device and new rings so that the Environment council technicians’ team could carry out a precise tracking in the next weeks in order to check its good adaptation to the natural environment.

The music moves in the province of Cádiz during the weekends to the sound of Artistas de Ruta. The programme, which during the whole year handles various musicians in tour in different auditoriums of the Cádiz geography, is already planned for the first 2006 trimester.

Flamenco, authors’ songs and rock concentrate an offers list which starts in January with Orchestra Fireluche, a Catalonian group which plays music with toys instruments. It will play in Chiclana, El Palmar and in Cádiz since the 13th of January. D’Callaos, a fusion flamenco Catalonian group, will also play since the 20th of January in Chiclana, San Fernando and in El Palmar.

February is going to be the author’s rock and progressive jazz month. The first tendency will be covered by Ricard Puigdomenech, since the 3rd of February in Rota, San Fernando and in El Palmar; and the second one by the Chilean Juan Carlos Mendoza, in Chiclana the 17th and in San Fernando on Saturday the 18th of January.

Yesterday The Master Salvador Guerrero, worn with a Spanish coat, a red scarf and with a smile on his face, went to Cádiz city council plenary hall in order to present his book Romances y Coplas de España. This favourite son of the city was accompanied by the mayor of Cádiz, Teófila Martinez, who left after saying few words because she had to attend another ceremony. The History doctor, the former cultural association president of Cádiz José María García León and the Culture Town Councillor, Antonio Castillo also took part in the meeting.

She shows in the Benot Gallery the exposition “Arriving to Cadiz” (Arribando Cadiz) until 8th of January.
In the beginning of 1812 the most part of the Iberic peninsula was ocuppied by Napoleon’s troops. Cadiz was one of the unique places which resisted against the french army and was the place where the members of parliament met to proclame the Constitution. This document established the basis of the liberal democracy and it put the end to the class society of that time. This is the reason why the city became a symbol of freedom.
The exposition Arriving to Cadiz presents the capital of Cadiz with a point of view of the people who arrived to the city from the sea, in 1812. “What we want to do in this project is to reproduce the scenes which would have taken place in that time and situated them into a place of the city of Cadiz. Some of them did occur and some did not, in fact we have documents of some scenes”.
The exposition which is open until 8th of January is presented moreover with 10 acrylic pictures of “small ship from La Caleta”, explained Lola Montero.

The swiss company Ikea has announced that it will open a new shop in Jerez de la Frontera, in Cadiz, and informed that has signed an agreement of buying and selling of the plots to build the shop.

Main Monuments of Cadiz

The Cathedral is the most important monument of the old part of the town. It is very impressive and mixes Baroque style with Neoclassic elements. The mortal remains of Manuel Falla, a famous spanish writer, rest inside the Cathedral.

Santa Cruz Church. It is built in Gothic style and is placed next to the new Cathedral in the Pópulo district.
The Roman Theatre. It is situated behind the Santa Cruz Church
Hospital de las Mujeres. It is a classic example of the Baroque architecture, it has wide patios and an Imperial stair.
Tavira Tower. Of Baroque Style, it was the official watchtower of the Port of Cádiz long time ago, and it offers the best views of the city. Nowadays, it is an exhibition room.

San Felipe Neri chapel. It represents the Baroque architecture of Andalucía of the 18th century. There is a picture from Murillo, dating back to 1680, inside. The Spanish Constitution was signed here in 1812.
Cádiz Museum. It is an archaeologic and art museum, which exhibits important tombs.
Mina Square. It is surrounded by wonderful buildings of Colonial style. It is worth seeing it due to the light effect.
